ABOUT

Born in 1990, Ziqian Liu is a Chinese photographer based in Shanghai.

She creates self-portraits which constantly explore the balanced state of peaceful coexistence between humans and nature. Her minimalist images reflect a sense of calmness, symmetry, rigor and order.

Liu’s work expresses the symbiosis between human beings and nature. In her approach, human beings and the rest of the natural world are equal and as a result she tries to find through her work a state of harmony between them.

Her work also focuses on perspective by conveying a new sense of perceiving things or situations through different angles, providing alternative point of view.

“In my work, the image in the mirror represent the idealized world I wish to live in, and the integration with the outside is just a reminder to respect and recognize the imbalance in the real world”, says Liu.

Liu focuses on self-portraits as it is according to her the best way to communicate and acknowledge herself. It is also a way to slow down time, by integrating herself with the things around her: flowers and fruits became derivative parts of her body as she investigates and observes their changes. As modern life pace has become faster, small details of everyday life got unnoticed, therefore being able to perceive and recognize the subtle changes in things around us is part of being able to accept oneself.
