The photograph is part of Miguel Vallinas series 'Roots' (Raiz) that continues the dynamics of the artist's previous portrait series 'Skins' and 'Second Skins'. It treats about our interaction with flora and nature, through a broader reflection about identity search, existence and individual choice.
In this new series, bodies with seasonal plants and floral bouquets replace human heads. The human body represents the stem, and the head represents the flora, while the hidden root is linked to the earth: the starting point and destination, the beginning and end of life. The root is the base of our existence that conditions the direction of our path. The term root indicates belonging, bonding, base, and nourishment.
The series title focuses precisely on the unseen element which represents the basis of the self. Therefore all the photographs in the series are shot from a mid-plane-take hiding the lower part of the stem where the roots start.
'Roots' is about “what we believe we are, what others think we are, what we really are and what we would like to be”.
