Inneroutfuture 9 Evgeny Merman
INNEROUTFUTURE Ink series is rooted in Evgeny Merman Hong Kong period, when the artist lived and worked in Hong Kong. As part of an experimental painting process, he studied ink-painting techniques on rice paper from an artist named "Master-Lee" who would sell his paintings on the street every day in the same corner. His works in this series combine different elements that Merman became aware of in the cosmopolitan city, including the ink circle motif called Enzo (done with one brush stroke), minimalist and geometric shapes, and custom-made stamps - along with autobiographical aspects.
Upon his return to Tel Aviv, Merman sought to develop an independent ritual, a personal technique that isolates the traditional elements he learned and repositioned them on the medium scale. In his works, he deconstructs and juxtaposes words, shapes and negative spaces. The monochromatic color scheme, although transparent at times, holds most of the creative space and yet allows the viewer to complete the blanks and to be engulfed in what appears to be half-urban half-Zen scenes.
