This work is part of Boulakia’s rust series. His works is based on a unique and personal technique developed by the artist that combines drawing with pencil and knife, and the use of diluted rust. The result is a rich texture that reminds of watercolor painting but whose accents are at once extremely violent and soft. If rust is commonly referred to as a symbol of material decay, in Boulakia’s work, the use of rust layers receive a new and beautiful meaning as it stands on its own right, similar to the layers of life. The use of rust gives the work its true symbolic depth. Like humans, rust also needs oxygen and water to exist.
